Newcastle City Library is a designated PATLIB UK centre, and is supported by both the UK Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office. It is the only library between Leeds and Glasgow that offers specialist patent information.

Your intellectual property comprises your brand, your products and your ideas; by protecting your IP you are protecting your identity. This means that looking after your IP is a vital part of running a successful business. To help you protect your IP our staff offer free one-to-one IP surgeries. During these surgeries an IP adviser will explain the basics of intellectual property: what is intellectual property, how does it relate to your business, how can you protect it, and why should you protect it?

Our free intellectual property surgeries are available at the following times every Wednesday and Friday:

Wednesday mornings:

  • 9:00 – 10:00am;
  • 10:15 – 11:15am;
  • 11:30 – 12:30pm;

Friday afternoons:

  • 2:00– 3:00pm;
  • 3:30 – 4:30pm.

In addition to IP surgeries the Business & IP Centre hosts IP workshops; it provides access to hard-copy and online IP resources; and it  has a large network of IP advisers, lawyers, and solicitors. The Business & IP Centre provides free Intellectual Property Office information packs and application forms for all types of intellectual property; it holds a range of historical British patent abstracts and name indexes from 1617 to 1930 and trade mark journals from 1876. The Centre’s in-house experts have produced a series of guides with advice about various aspects of IP. This includes patent searches, trade mark applications, and the timeline for patent applications.

If you’re patenting a new product, enforcing a copyright restriction, protecting your company’s logo, or registering a design, the Business & IP Centre can guide you through the process.
